Start Your Practice

How will you help me start my own practice?

Our team will work with you through each step of starting your practice to help you put a strong foundation in place for long term growth and success. Leverage our experience in starting a small private practice to a large and thriving business with multiple locations.

Is private practice right for me?

It depends. Private practice is not for everyone. One study showed the highest levels of satisfaction for private practice clinicians were in the areas of: professional independence, flexible hours, and level of success with clients (Walfish and O’Donnell, 2008). Another poll of private practice clinicians revealed the following (Barnett and Henshaw, 2003):

Pros”:  Being your own boss, Flexibility (location, hours, specialization), Unlimited earnings potential, Control over business decisions, Full responsibility of the success of one’s practice

Cons”:  Financial Uncertainty, Responsibility for all expenses and overhead, professional isolation (for solo practitioners), operations responsibility (billing, collections, insurance, employee decisions)

With Genesis Assist, we help take the burden off your shoulders.  You can trust our billing, insurance, and client care experts to provide service and help you maximize your revenues.

Is practice ownership right for me?

The fact that you are visiting this website is a good indication that you have what it takes to succeed and we can help you. Small business ownership is not for everyone, as any business owner will tell you. The mental health field is quickly evolving, which complicates predictions for all clinicians, especially those who are practice owners. Refer to the checklist on the Start Your Practice page.

Psychologists and writers Steven Walfish and Jeffrey Barnet note, “It is the Mental Health Professional with the spirit of the entrepreneur who is most successful in private practice” (Walfish & Barnett, 2009).

The following is an “Entrepreneur Checklist” based on the work of Baron and Shane (2008).

  • Can you handle uncertainty?

  • Are you energetic?

  • Do you believe in yourself and your abilities?

  • Can you handle reversals and failures well?

  • Are you passionate about your vision and goals?

  • Do you have good people-skills?

  • Are you adaptable?

  • Are you willing to take risks or leaps of faith?

If you have the vision to launch into practice ownership, Genesis Assist is here to help! Call our consultants today and receive support from a team of successful private practice owners and leaders.

What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in relationships. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways. Coaching, on the other hand, supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is future focused. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life. The emphases in a coaching relationship are on action, accountability, and follow through. (ICF website)

Medical Credentialing

How long does it take to obtain credentialing?

It can take as little as 60 days to over 180 days. Panels differ greatly, but the average is 90-120 days. Providing all the correct and necessary information up front helps to ensure you are credentialed as quickly as possible.

What are the potential delays in this process?

Even when all necessary credentialing information is submitted to the insurance panel(s), insurance companies (on a rare occasion) misplace the forms needed, consequently delaying the credentialing process. While this is not a frequent occurrence, the credentialing specialist will keep working copies and will be able to resubmit if necessary.

What types of information do I need to provide?

At Genesis Assist, we have designed a Master Application which asks just about anything and everything any panel could require. You simply fill out this application in its entirety (including all login IDs and Passwords), provide your current license, current liability insurance policy, resume/CV, a copy of your highest diploma, and a W-9 form.

Do I have to be licensed and have liability insurance?

Unfortunately, yes. All panels require providers to be licensed with their applicable state. You are not required to possess an individual liability insurance policy; however, you do have to at least be on a group policy.

I’ve heard something about a NPI and NPI 2; what are they and do I need them?

A NPI is a National Provider Identifier and is an assigned number to each individual provider; a NPI 2 is assigned to an organization. If you are starting your own practice/company you will need both. Each is simply a number for insurance panels to identify you in the sea of providers nationwide.

What if I don’t have a NPI?

No problem. This is a fairly quick and painless process and can be included in your credentialing package at no extra charge.

How long does it take to obtain a NPI?

It can be as little as five minutes or as much as three days.

I’ve also heard about a CAQH number; what is this and do I need one?

CAQH stands for the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare. It is a program that nearly all insurance panels use to credential providers. It is essentially a storehouse for your information to be used by various panels for credentialing and re-credentialing. Some panels only credential through the CAQH, so it is imperative that you participate with this program.

What if I don’t have a CAQH number?

Just like the NPI, obtaining a CAQH number is fairly simple and can also be included in your credentialing package at no extra charge. It usually takes about one week. After the number is obtained you will need to create a profile on the website and complete the full CAQH application.

CAQH ProView Sign In

Can you help me with CAQH?

We certainly can. You have to complete your online profile, but we can help you through the process, send in your authorization/release, and other documentation. We can also help you maintain your CAQH profile for $20 a month. This will keep all of your documentation current on the CAQH database and take care of your quarterly re-attestation.

Okay, I think I’m ready to get started. How does this process work?

There are six, fairly basic steps to the credentialing process:

  1. Call us to discuss your credentialing needs.

  2. Submit the master application to the Genesis Assist credentialing specialist.

  3. Provide all current documentation: state license, liability insurance (with limits set at $3 mil per occurrence and $5 mil aggregate), current resume/curriculum vitae (include a written explanation of any gaps of 5 months or more), copy of diplomas, copy of NCMHCE exam if taken, and a completed and signed (but not dated) W-9.

  4. The credentialing specialist will submit an interest form to each insurance panel requested.

  5. Regularly check emails for correspondence or follow up requests from the credentialing specialist and respond to any needs within 24 hours.

  6. The credentialing specialist will follow up until the credentialing process is complete.
